29th October 2004: Fifth Birthday featuring Kiki

Thanks to everyone who came down to Kinkers for our fifth birthday and were instrumental in making it possibly our best night ever. Kiki was amazing and for those who want another butchers you'll have to wait till next year when he'll be making his return trip to Scotland.
Kiki laid down a phenomenal set on a tip top evening which was fitting of five years. Laurence Hughes also pushed his musical boat out to the usual length; demonstrating why he is one of Glasgow's most dextrous party DJs.

24th September 2004: Frank Martiniq

This young German became an honorary Glaswegian in the 24 hours in which he was here. He tuned into the Subbie in no time and proceeded to lay down a remarkably broken, funky and melodic groove which simply screamed the fact that he is the new voice to be heard on the Cologne techno scene.

Martiniq has predominately been releasing on Boxer Sports records in Cologne however recently he released his first devastating material on Berlin's fast impressing Sender Records. He's sure to be a figure to look out for over the next few years and will be back in 2005 with a fresh bundle of records for your ears and feet.

Please check our mixes page to hear his admirable efforts.

We are proud to introduce straight from Cologne - a fresh figure in funky electro.

Recording on 'Boxer Sport' - Frank has remained an illusive figure when compared to his peers who chose to release on Kompakt.
14 of his own productions compliment a large stock of remixes which number in the 20s. All of them are examples of experimental and refreshingly moulded instrumental dance tracks but with a serious nod towards accessibility on the dance floor.
His 12 inches are the ones which have been making DJ around the world twitch. Understated in one instance and possessing huge presence on the other - he clearly has an ear for the exciting end of melodic techno. The discerning clubber will have no doubt unwittingly danced in delights such as Adriano, his late 'Nite Toolz' trilogy, clubstuhl or the intriguing and dextrous LP 'Neowoogie'
At Kinky Afro however he will be performing a DJ set as his play-lists were simply too good to ignore. A who's who of modern electronic club music litter the list below and if you fancy yourself as a train-spotter or feel like a mild bout of education then just scroll down.

For a fuller picture of this guy check: www.martiniq.de (the intro soundscape is worth it alone!)

Dinnae Get Oot the Dinghy:

The first boat party in several years went down like laughing gas in a loony asylum. A wide selection of DJs hosted a cruise up the Clyde to a fine Friday night sunset. Mr Mafro, Dirty Larry and Ginny from Club 69 kept the top deck hot; whilst the Freak Menoovers and DJ Prime8 pulled off a stunning four deck mix in cramped conditions downstairs. Pictures should be available soon so check back to try and pick out your mates or do some star spotting.

After four hours of cruising and schmoozing the boat performed a midnight docking at the pier at the end of Jamaica St and all aboard strolled in fine Black Star Liner style to Kinky Afro where the party got a lot harder and much more messy. Thankfully there are no pictures of this as many a salmon face had stowed away and snuck aboard the Sub.

14th May 2004 Monkey Cum Sessions with DJ Prime8

Spring was in full swing and as such the Monkey Cum sessions came back.

Funky Spunky and a little bit rude the May session witnessed a creamy blend of sounds swung and strung together through dirty groove, jamming tunes and smooth monkey moves.

DJ Prime8 teamed up with Mr Mafro in a 4 hours X 4 deck mash up of everything from Reggae to Rave. There was exclusive monkey bootlegs and masks a plenty to swing from the rafters in a funk filled frenzy.
9th April 2004 Kinky Afro featuring Harri
April was a belter. On the Easter weekend we had Harri down to play his fine Dub style in a warm up to remember. He set the tone for the bass heavy Bus straight out of Berlin. These two guys who record on Scape treated us to an intriguing and broken set of dub, minimal hip hop and reggae hybrid grooves with Glasgow’s MC SoomT on vocals. Hopefully we shall be streaming this set soon so check back on the website for news.

12th March 2004 featuring Milton Jackson Live
Basement Jaxx after party featuring Milton Jackson live and DJ Matthew Bennett. Pop along after the Carling Academy gig with your ticket and get £2 off your door price. Ayawara will be in full effect with their live afro rhythms and improvised Djembe breaks. Basement Jaxx are unable to commit to definitely playing on the night but after enjoying one of their best ever DJ gigs back in 1996 at the Sub Club they are up for the laugh. Either way it will be a cracking night hosted by DJ Matthew Bennett with one of Glasgow’s finest mangled house music producers Milton Jackson playing along side MC Nordin (Ground Control, Mish Mash) and previewing their new records forged in collaboration with each other.

Friday 13th Febuary with very special guests Brian Murnin and Jim Hutchison

Thanks to all those that made it down to our Murder Ball on Friday 13th of February. A completely unique night was had by all, as a team of Holby City make up artists managed to gore, slash and shoot their way through about 200 punters before a hilarious encore with a bootlegged remix of Thriller courtesy of DJ Prime8. Brian Murnin fresh from his practice at Subculture the week before tore up the dancefloor along with DJ Gargyole Jim Hutchison and resident demon DJ Matthew Bennett.23th Jan Inaugural Monkey Cum session.

What a way to launch the year with four hours of relentless Monkey Cum action. 4 decks over 4 hours with DJs Prime8 and Kinkyafromatthew. It was a blast and many more are being furiously pencilled in, the next in May. If you didn’t receive a Monkey Cum CD please contact us with your address and we will post one out to you as fast as a monkey can bust its nuts. Check out the site for regular monkey cum updates and pop down to the club for the next session on Friday 14th May.

17th October 2003 - 4th Birthday Party with very special Guest Thomas Fehlmann

Our birthday celebrations will treat you to Fehlmann's dub techno tendancies with Ayawara; our live drum troupe, adding their own west African spice with their usual Afro breaks and percussive grooves. With Fehlmann's exquisite dub grooves and bass sequences combined with Ayawara's funky fusions of traditional rhythms and modern improvised breaks - the result will be a subterranean journey of sparse but euphoric sounds and live invigorating rhythms.
Anybody who caught his now much hyped set at our Glasnost project two years ago, will know without a doubt that this is a party not to be missed with a few birthday surprises planned for your pleasure and presents for early lucky customers and dance floor funkies.

Doors from 11 pm - 3am £8.

12th September 2003 - featuring Radio Magnetic’s Dougal Perman

Autumn comes rumbling in with the gutsy and edgy Afro sound-system piloted by none other than Radio Magnetic’s Machiavellian man of music – Dougal Perman. This most attractive of musical purveyors will be at the helm of the Sub on Friday 12th September alongside resident DJ Matthew Bennett and in house Afro percussive drum troupe Ayawara.

Dougal, who has been the chief programmer and co-founder of uber chic and underground dance radio station Radio Magnetic since it’s inception 2 years ago, has a wealth of musical knowledge. If it’s part of the Scottish scene “Comrade Permanent” will have either heard it, penned it, published it, broken it, remixed it or broadcast it. The man is essential.
Anybody who is familiar with the station’s sound will know what to expect from young Dougal; a diverse blend of irrefutable quality, with an ear for excellence and a love of shaking his shapely buttocks to tunes - the dancefloor satisfaction at our next Kinky Afro is assured. The usual percussive breaks from Ayawara; our three piece Afro band, will fuse the funk across a wide spectrum of tunes from Reggae to Rave and back again whilst they no doubt politely fend off waves of over enthusiastic drunken assailants.
Meanwhile, Robin is off again to the Balkans to tease out more underground delights such as the Bosnian dons: Urban Beat who will be rejoining the Kinky collective for a Spring party to match their last blistering technical three deck hard house explosion.

Doors from 11 pm - 3am £8.
